JOGJAKARTA INDONESIA MAY 2006 EARTHQUAKE
VJMCharities built 44 Permanat houses in Klaten and Bantul besides distribution of some food and dresses.
The Earthquake in Central Java, Jogjakarta, Indonesia on May 27, 2006 had a massive impact on Jogjakarta its economies and very survival of its identity now looking like ruins. The houses are rumbles and people shattered and traumatised of entering into there houses or building fearing another killer earthquake which killed more than 5778.
A 5.9 Richter scale earthquake struck Jogjakarta, Central Java, Indonesia on the morning of 27 June, 2006 at 05.53.WIB. Though it was not one of the worldâ€™s biggest earthquakes still it had destroyed more than 650.000 families and killed 5.778 people affecting 11 districts.
VJM covered 2 Districts (Bantul and Klaten) which consist of 473 villages under an 18 month project period.
The death toll due to this killer earthquake is accounted as about 5.778 (DIY Government report dated 24 /6/06)
Besides causing loss of life, the earthquake destroyed thousands of homes, and causing significant property damage. In Bantul, about 71.763 houses were fully destroyed, forcing over 779.287 people from their homes. In Klaten, about 29.988 houses were reported to be fully damaged (DIY Government report dated 24 /6/06)
The majority of those affected in Bantul and Klaten are farmers, handicraft and home industrial people. The earthquake also destroyed their shops, school, public buildings, and their basic and source of living, causing a total loss of income in industrial and trading sectors among the affected population
Though besides the total damaged house there are thousand of houses that partially damaged. Some people due to heat and remote rain stay in tents. Some houses are partially damaged still people stay in their home thou they also fear that the remaining part of house may fall on them.
Our focus of shelter aids is to those whose house is totally damaged or those houses inhabitable. The damaged house can be repaired but for those whose totally destroyed there is no way unless to rebuilt it from basics.
The exact number of amount is till under discussion in the parliament. No of houses affected 216.804

VJMâ€™s initial response
VJM Director along with 4 colleagues went to Klaten and Bantul to asses the damage. VJM also distributed some clothes to the local people who were affected.
VJMâ€™s Rehabilitation Work
VJM volunteer workers and networks have been actively participating in the coordination efforts being As a result of meetings with the government officials and other Indonesian and international NGOs active in all districts affected by the earth quake, VJM selection on the area based on the assessment carried out by the agency and the existence of VJM network/ volunteer in the area.. VJM covered 2 districts (Bantul and Klaten) with approximately 473 villages (75 villages in Bantul and 398 villages in Klaten) for house reconstruction. VJM will be benefiting around 44 families, and more than 1000 individuals benefited from this project of distribution of food, dresses and construction of permanent houses.
